    Walk Across America

The Hillsdale Board of Health is concerned about childhood obesity and the lack of physical activity amongst children and adults.  According to the National Center of chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, “The prevalence of overweight among children aged six to 11 years has more than doubled in the past 20 years and among adolescents aged 12-19 has more than tripled.”  The Board would like to encourage our Hillsdale youth to get more actively involved.

The Hillsdale Board of Health will continue to work with the school systems to develop a program of fitness.  The Board will donate pedometers or counters to our fourth graders.  The Certified School Nurse and Physical education teacher will promote a program, of students walking and recording their steps or miles on a chart.  The miles will be recorded on a map of United States as distance points to various cities.  The goal will be for the entire grade working together to reach California.  The students will be encouraged to record their walking during school hours.  Hopefully, families will also get involved in walking.

We hope by donating pedometers and getting students excited about walking, we will foster greater health consciousness and fitness throughout the child’s life.  We feel this activity supports both the physical education and health curriculum.  Our goal is one day to be able to donate pedometers to every student, for now it is one grade at a time.
