Summer Reading
Summer Reading supports learning throughout the summer and keeps our students on track for success in the upcoming school year. According to the NJDOE website, the National Center for Summer Learning has been the lead agency in identifying and studying the effects of “summer learning loss” on youth throughout the county. Since 2001, the National Center for Summer Learning is to ensure that “more children and youth have ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills during the summer months.” The summer reading lists for Meadowbrook and Smith Schools have been created with the input of our teachers, Media Specialists, and the Hillsdale Public Library. You will find the reading lists for grades K - 2 and 3-4 on our school websites under the “Summer Review” tab.
The summer reading list for elementary students is issued as a book selection guide for parents and students. Summer reading should be an enjoyable experience. If a book at any grade level catches the interest of your child, certainly allow them to select the book. If the reading level is too difficult, use the opportunity to share the book by reading aloud. Parents should not be concerned that a book is “too easy” or “too difficult.” The list is designed to encourage reading enjoyment.
A parent should not feel that any child is expected to read all of the books on the list. Also, do not feel obligated to buy these books. The books are available in our public library. You are encouraged to preview books before your child reads them. In this way, you can decide which books are appropriate for your child. Parents may wish to encourage children to read books in a series or other books by the same author.
Launch into Summer Reading with the Hillsdale Public Library’s Summer Reading Program! The Hillsdale Public School District values our partnership with the Hillsdale Public Library! We encourage you to visit the public library and participate in their summer reading program! The library also offers free programs for children, teens and families! Join a Children’s Book Club, Book Talk, Yoga, TED Talk, etc. Please visit their website for more information!
We hope that you and your children will find time to enjoy many books this summer. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Happy reading!
Summer Mathematics
Please continue to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division facts. Math fact fluency leads to high order mathematics. Through automaticity students free up their working memory and can devote it to problem solving and learning new concepts and skills. Fact fluency is gained through practice, with mastery of basic math facts.
Go mathematicians!
