    "Trick Words"
     
            High frequency words, or "trick words" as they are called in our FUNdations program, are words that children encounter frequently in print that do not follow the phonetic rules of other words. These words are an important foundation for learning to read. Learning high frequency words will make children stronger readers and writers. It will help children increase their reading speed, fluency, and ultimately improve their comprehension.

    There are many creative ways to practice high frequency. Below is a list of some fun activities to play with your child at home to help them become more familiar with our growing list of high frequency words.

    High Frequency Word Activity Suggestions

    Creative Ideas for Practicing Trick Words

     

    1. Print your words with your fingers five or more times in flour, salt, or sugar.
    2. Use yarn or string to form your words.
    3. Read a story. See how many times you can find your words.
    4. Form your words out of small objects such as coins or buttons.
    5. Print the words on someone’s back using your fingers. Have the person guess your words.
    6. Use clay or Play-Doh to shape the letters in your high frequency words.
    7. Use cooked spaghetti to form your words.
    8. Stamp your words using assorted stamps and colors.
    9. Paint your words using watercolors or finger-paints.
    10. Memory- Make a double set of the words and play a Memory card game.
